AI Visibility Playbook, Part 2: The Entity Web

Part 1 of this playbook covered getting cited: clear pages, real answers, structured data. This part covers what comes before any of that matters — whether the AI knows you exist as a thing, distinct from every similar-sounding thing. I learned this the hard way in October 2026.

What this gives you

01

Why the AI guesses

Entity resolution, not lookup: an uncertain name falls to the stronger entity every time.

02

The identity web

SameAs links across every property you own — each one pointing at the others.

03

The hygiene pass

Homepage in the sitemap, a verified business profile, and one consistent name-address-phone everywhere.

04

The honest limit

No guarantees of citations or rankings — just the removal of the confusion failure mode.

01

The problem: ties go to the stronger entity

An AI answer doesn’t look you up like a phone book. It resolves your name to an entity — its internal model of what “that name” means — and that model is built from everything it has ever read about you. A competitor with funding announcements, press coverage, and thousands of mentions has a strong entity. A small business with one website has a thin one.

When the model is uncertain, the tie goes to the stronger entity. That’s not sabotage and it’s not a penalty. It’s gravity. You counter gravity with mass — more corroboration, from more places, all saying the same thing.

02

Step 1: Build the identity web

One domain claiming “I am this business” is a claim. Five interlinked properties saying it is an entity. On your homepage’s Organization schema, the sameAs field should link every property you own:

  • Your TikTok profile
  • Your Instagram profile
  • Your YouTube channel
  • Your Facebook page, if you have one
  • Your Google Business Profile, once verified

Then link back: every one of those profiles should link to your website, and ideally to each other where the platform allows it. I went from one sameAs link to three in a single edit on October 6. It took ten minutes.

03

Step 2: Sitemap hygiene

Open the sitemap file your robots.txt advertises and check: is your homepage in it? Mine wasn’t — 105 URLs, and the single most important page on the domain was missing. Every other page was telling Google “crawl me” while the front door wasn’t listed.

The fix is one line of XML with priority 1.0. Check yours today; it takes sixty seconds and there’s no downside.

04

Step 3: Become “verified official information”

When an AI says there’s “no verified official information” about your business, it’s telling you exactly what’s missing. For Google, verified means the Google Business Profile: a verified listing with your real address, real phone number, real hours, and real photos is the closest thing to an official record in their knowledge graph.

This is the highest-leverage item on the list and the only one that requires you personally — the verification video has to be recorded by the business owner. No agency can do it for you. Do it this week.

05

Step 4: Get said about you, somewhere you don’t own

Everything above is still you talking about you. The entity gets strong when other domains say what you are: directory listings with consistent name-address-phone, a chamber of commerce page, a local news mention, your YouTube channel (a separate Google property) pointing at your site, customer reviews on third-party platforms.

You don’t need fifty. You need a handful, all consistent — same business name spelled the same way, same address, same phone number, everywhere. Inconsistency is worse than absence: three different phone numbers across three directories reads as three different businesses.

06

What this doesn’t promise

None of this guarantees an AI Overview, a citation, or a ranking. Anyone selling you that guarantee is lying. What the entity web does is remove the failure mode where the AI looks at your name and guesses someone else — because there’s finally enough corroborated mass for it to resolve you correctly.

That’s the whole game at this level: not outranking anyone, just being unmistakable.

Operator application

DIAGNOSE

Where is your entity thinnest?

Count the independent domains that describe your business correctly. One is a claim; five is an entity.

DECIDE

What do you fix first?

The verified business profile — it’s the only step that requires the owner, and the closest thing to an official record.

RECEIPT

How do you know it’s working?

AI answers stop hedging on your name across surfaces. Track weekly, not hourly.

Direct answers

What serious buyers ask.

How many sameAs links do I need?

Every property you own: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and your Google Business Profile once verified. Then link back from each profile to your site.

Does the sitemap entry really matter?

It’s sixty seconds with no downside. The homepage carries your Organization schema — it should be the first URL the sitemap lists.

Can an agency do the GBP verification for me?

No. The verification video must be recorded by the business owner. That’s exactly why it’s the highest-leverage item — it can’t be faked or outsourced.

Does this guarantee AI citations?

No. It removes the “never heard of it” failure mode. Platforms control their own outputs.
